The Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre is a compact museum and movie theatre inside The Hermitage in Mount Cook Village. Its displays cover the region’s climbing and transport history, the hotel, and Hillary’s connection to Aoraki. I’d stop if you want context for the mountains or an indoor change of pace; it is less satisfying as a very quick museum-only visit. Allow about an hour if you want to take in the exhibits and films. The entrance is through the hotel lobby on Terrace Road, and the centre is listed as wheelchair accessible.

The centre covers Mount Cook aviation and transport history, as well as climbing memorabilia. One particularly tangible piece is a Ferguson tractor used on Hillary’s South Pole expedition.
