What it is
A handsome stacked-stone landmark with big block lettering and the National Park Service arrowhead, this is the park’s de facto “we made it” photo spot. It sits at the start of the Main Park Road off US‑191, beside the visitor center.
Why stop
It’s the classic arrival photo with a red rock backdrop—quick, easy, and undeniably iconic. You’ll see plenty of folks lining up for a snapshot before heading into the park proper.
What to expect
- Short walk from the entrance/visitor center area to the freestanding sign.
- Busy scene during peak seasons and midday; lines form for unobstructed photos.
- The surrounding slopes and desert colors make simple shots look great.
Wildlife
You’re at a busy entrance, so sightings are hit-or-miss. Ravens are common overhead; lizards, rabbits, or the occasional mule deer are more likely deeper in the park.

- Park at the visitor center lot and walk over—don’t block the entrance road.
- Morning or late afternoon light is kinder and crowds thin out.
- From roughly April through October, the park uses timed entry during the day; plan your stop around your reservation window.
Best time to visit
Early morning on weekdays is best for soft light and fewer people. Late afternoon works too if you prefer warmer tones. Midday, especially on weekends, is the most crowded and the harshest light.
