Consolation Lakes Trail

Consolation Lakes is a 5.8 km (3.6 mi) out-and-back from Moraine Lake’s day-use area to Lower Consolation Lake, the first lake. Parks Canada estimates about two hours, rates it easy and lists 135 m of climbing. It’s a good choice if you want a real walk into an alpine basin without giving up half the day. The marked route ends at the first lake; the upper-lake boulder scramble is a separate, rougher outing.

Moraine Lake Road is closed to personal vehicles year-round. Reach the day-use area by shuttle, public transit or a licensed commercial tour; if you take the Parks Canada shuttle, start at Lake Louise Park & Ride and confirm your return ride. Service is seasonal, so check the current schedule and reserve ahead. Dogs are allowed on leash in open season, but pets on Parks Canada shuttles must stay in a small carrier held on your lap.

The route starts across rough rockslide boulders below Tower of Babel, then settles into forest over roots and uneven stones. Short boardwalks cross wet ground and small streams. At the Taylor Lake junction, stay on the Consolation Lakes route; Babel Creek accompanies the later stretch. The trees open into a meadow near the end, with views toward Panorama Ridge, Bident Mountain, Mount Babel and Quadra Glacier.

The walk finishes at a broad boulder shore. You can enjoy the lake basin from the meadow or beside Babel Creek; reaching the water means an optional scramble over large blocks, some of which can shift. Hoary marmots have been seen among the shoreline rocks, so keep them wild and give them room. For a photo, use the boulder shore as foreground with the mountain wall behind it.
