From US 212, turn onto Rock Creek Road (Forest Road 2421); the campground entrance is about a mile ahead on the left. It’s a summer campground, generally open from late May into early September, depending on weather. The Beartooth Highway closes seasonally, so check current campground dates and road conditions before you go.

Greenough Lake Campground is an 18-site Forest Service campground on the Main Fork of Rock Creek, about 12 miles south of Red Lodge and just off the Beartooth Highway. Aspen and pine shade the sites beneath the Beartooth Range. It’s a good fit for a simple overnight or a night or two between drives, with the creek and Greenough Lake close by.

Campsites and basicsEach site has a picnic table and fire ring; two sites and the vault toilets are accessible.

Each site has a picnic table and fire ring; two sites and the vault toilets are accessible. These are standard, nonelectric sites, and drinking water comes from a hand pump. There’s no food service listed, so bring your meals and water containers. Grizzlies live in the surrounding forest, so secure food in an approved container, a locked vehicle or the provided lockers.

The lake and nearby walksGreenough Lake is about 0.2 miles from camp, an easy walk for a paddle or a look at the water.

Greenough Lake is about 0.2 miles from camp, an easy walk for a paddle or a look at the water. Canoeing, kayaking and rainbow trout fishing are listed there, and the Main Fork is also a fishing stream. I’d come first for the creekside setting and easy lake access; fishing reports vary, so don’t make a catch the whole plan. Hellroaring and Lake Fork trailheads reach the Beartooth Wilderness, and the Parkside National Recreation Trail is nearby too.
