A quick geology stopGoat Mountain Observation Point is a roadside pullout and scenic viewpoint on Ross Maxwell…

Goat Mountain Observation Point is a roadside pullout and scenic viewpoint on Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive, with an interpretive exhibit about the mountain’s volcanic past. It is 14.2 miles from the drive’s northern end. Stop if you want to pair the layered peaks with the story of how this landscape formed; the panel is central to the visit.

The exhibit traces an explosive eruption followed by repeated pyroclastic flows and thick, silica-rich lava domes. It suggests rising magma may have flashed water trapped in older lava into steam, triggering the first blast. Later uplift, faulting and erosion cut through the domes, exposing steep, jointed cliffs and a dike that may be part of the original magma-feeding system.

Fit it into the driveThis is the roadside observation stop, not the summit of Goat Mountain.

This is the roadside observation stop, not the summit of Goat Mountain. It sits along the 30-mile Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive toward Castolon and Santa Elena Canyon. Auto and bus/RV parking serve the stop, and the viewing area is wheelchair accessible.

Frame the viewThe exhibit panel and paired peaks share the same view.

The exhibit panel and paired peaks share the same view. Include the panel at the edge of a photo with the mountain behind it to connect the volcanic explanation to the landscape.
