Exclamation Point

Exclamation Point is a canyon-edge viewpoint reached on the North Vista Trail, 1.6 miles one way from the North Rim Ranger Station. It’s a good pick if you want to leave the road and look down into the Black Canyon itself. Take time at the earlier overlooks too: the endpoint isn’t a sure step up from them, and the views change as you walk.

The route is rated moderately strenuous. The path is unpaved, narrow, and steep, and the walk is about 3.2 miles round trip. It passes through sagebrush and Gambel oak, then pinyon-juniper, with drainages and earlier viewpoints before a short loop along the rim. There’s no wheelchair access, and pets aren’t allowed on the trail. This is canyon-edge walking, so keep children close.

The Gunnison sits far below in a narrow corridor, with the walls rising across the gorge. The short loop gives you more than one angle, and South Rim Road is visible on the far side. If you spot a vehicle, leave it in the frame; the canyon feels much taller with something familiar for scale.

The exposed basement rock began as sediment and volcanic ash laid down in a shallow sea. Heat and pressure turned it into schist and gneiss about 1.8 billion years ago. Later magma entered cracks and cooled into igneous rock, adding mineral-colored bands to the walls. The river cut through softer layers for millions of years before reaching the harder rock around two million years ago.

Start at the North Rim Ranger Station, where there’s trailhead parking and a pit toilet. The water fill-up is summer-only, so bring what you’ll need for the hike; there’s no food service on the North Rim. The final seven miles of Black Canyon Road are unpaved, and North Rim roads close to vehicles in winter and early spring. The viewpoint itself has no services.
