Exclamation Point

Overview

Exclamation Point is the North Rim’s cliff-edge overlook, reached via the North Vista Trail. It peers 1,870 feet down to the Gunnison River and straight into one of the canyon’s narrowest, sheer-walled corridors. The viewpoint feels wild and unfiltered—there are no railings—so the drama (and the exposure) is front and center.

Getting There & The Hike

Start at the North Rim Ranger Station on the North Vista Trail. It’s about 3 miles round trip with roughly 200 feet of total elevation change—mostly gradual, with a few uneven or narrow bits and little shade. At the junction, turn left for Exclamation Point (right continues toward Green Mountain). Parking is at the ranger station; it’s the busiest lot on the North Rim, yet this side of the park still sees far fewer visitors than the South Rim.

What You’ll See

Expect stomach-dropping verticality and sweeping views up and down the canyon. The walls here showcase ancient gneiss and schist with intrusions of lighter granite, striped and sculpted by the Gunnison’s relentless cut. The area loops around several rock perches, so you can sample different angles without much extra effort—great for photos and a true sense of the canyon’s depth.

Wildlife

The North Rim is quieter, which boosts wildlife odds. Mule deer, lizards, and birds of prey are typical; black bears roam the area as well. Early morning and evening are your best bets for sightings and cooler temps—stay alert and follow bear safety practices.

Safety Essentials

There are no railings at the point and the drops are absolute. Watch your footing, keep kids close, and give the edge respect. Summer sun can be fierce; bring plenty of water, a hat, sunscreen, and sturdy shoes.

Best Time to Visit

Arrive early for the best light and true solitude. Midday often means harsher light and heat, especially given the limited shade along the trail. The North Rim generally stays calm even in peak season, but early starts make parking and the trail feel practically yours.

Bring binoculars to pick out river details and the canyon’s colorful dikes. If you’re craving more, continue beyond the junction toward Green Mountain for broader North Rim vistas, then circle back to linger at Exclamation Point as the light shifts.
