Gunnison Point is the short-walk overlook beside the South Rim Visitor Center, with an early look into the Black Canyon and the Gunnison River far below. It's a good place to get your bearings before choosing another overlook or a hike; rocky spires give this view more to study than a simple sweep of cliff wall.

The unpaved approach from the visitor center is short, with steps, some of them large. Don't expect a smooth, step-free path. The visitor center and its parking area are right at the start; the National Park Service lists a vault or composting restroom and a trailhead here.

Look for spires in the steep, dark walls. Some of the metamorphic rock exposed here is about 1.8 billion years old. The Gunnison Uplift raised those ancient rocks around 60 million years ago, and the river began cutting the canyon in force as early as two million years ago. Pink pegmatite dikes cross the walls; crystals up to six feet long have been documented in the broader canyon.

The Rim Rock Trail heads from this area toward the South Rim Campground. Oak Flat Trail makes a strenuous 1.6-mile loop below the rim but doesn't reach the river; it gets narrow and steep in places. Choose Oak Flat if you want a proper hike, not just another quick view. Bring water for a longer walk: drinking water isn't available in the park from late fall through mid-spring.

If the angle allows, keep the Gunnison River in the frame below the cliffs; that thin line helps show the scale. Timber rails and shrubs make a useful foreground when you want to include the overlook itself.
