Painted Wall Overlook is a viewpoint on the South Rim facing the opposite wall of the Black Canyon. The cliff is Colorado’s tallest at about 2,250 feet from the Gunnison River to the rim, and broad pale veins stripe its dark face. If you are choosing one South Rim overlook to linger at, make it this one. The marked wall and the depth below are what set it apart.

Take the short walkThe overlook is reached from South Rim Road by a 200-yard unpaved path.

The overlook is reached from South Rim Road by a 200-yard unpaved path. Give yourself time to walk out and look around; this is not just a view from the car. On busy holiday weekends, parking at popular viewpoints can fill, so leave some slack in a crowded South Rim day.

Follow the pale seamsTrace one of the light bands across the cliff.

Trace one of the light bands across the cliff. They are pegmatite dikes, where magma pushed into older metamorphic rock and cooled underground. At Painted Wall, the cooling was slow enough for crystals to grow up to six feet long. The stripes are not painted on the rock: they are the record of molten material forced into cracks in the canyon’s ancient foundation.

An ancient rock in a younger canyonThe intrusions formed about 1.4 to 1.7 billion years ago.

The intrusions formed about 1.4 to 1.7 billion years ago. The Gunnison River carved through younger deposits over much of the past 15 million years, reaching the harder metamorphic and igneous rocks around two million years ago and continuing to cut downward. From here, those different time scales meet in one exposed wall, with the river still visible far below.

The South Rim is the only part of the park open year-round, though services are limited in winter and early spring. The approach to the overlook is short but unpaved; allow time for the walk and check current road conditions before setting out.
