What Sunset View isSunset View is a drive-up overlook and picnic area on Black Canyon’s South Rim, looking west…

Sunset View is a drive-up overlook and picnic area on Black Canyon’s South Rim, looking west across the Gunnison River and canyon. It’s a good stop for open light and an easy picnic; the walls here feel less sheer than at the park’s tightest gorge overlooks. If you’re after the most dramatic drop, spend your time at one of those instead.

Plan the stopThe overlook sits on the paved South Rim Drive, a seven-mile road with a dozen overlooks.

The overlook sits on the paved South Rim Drive, a seven-mile road with a dozen overlooks. A short path connects the parking area to the rim. The overlook is marked wheelchair accessible, though the path’s grade and surface aren’t specified. Picnic tables and vault or composting restrooms are in the parking lot. Bring your own food: there are no restaurants in the park. Summer water refill stations are at the campground and visitor center; water isn’t available in spring, fall, or winter. In winter and early spring, the road past Gunnison Point is usually closed to vehicles, so a drive-up visit may not be possible; closed roads can still be used for skiing or snowshoeing.

Go for the western lightThe open horizon makes sunset the signature moment, and it can draw more people then.

The open horizon makes sunset the signature moment, and it can draw more people then. Come earlier for a quieter picnic. For a photo, keep the Gunnison River near the bottom of the frame; it gives the cliffs a sense of scale that a wall of rock alone can lose on a phone.

The canyon belowThe dark canyon walls expose crystalline rock nearly two billion years old.

The dark canyon walls expose crystalline rock nearly two billion years old. The Gunnison began cutting through the uplift about two million years ago, carving a deep gorge through that much older rock. From this overlook, the canyon starts to open out beyond its steepest stretch.
