Overview

About Chasm View Overlook (South Rim)

Why stop

  • The Gunnison sits far below between sheer, close-set canyon walls.
The name comes from cliffs that are often darkened by shadow. Look past the name and you'll see bands, ledges, and folds in the rock on both sides of the gorge.

The packed-gravel approach is listed as wheelchair accessible, and accessible restrooms are listed at Chasm View. For a photo, include both canyon walls and keep the Gunnison visible near the bottom of the frame; that gives the depth some scale. The nearby Painted Wall Overlook is a separate stop around the bend, with a different, more upriver view.

South Rim Road beyond Gunnison Point closes to vehicles in winter, usually reopening around mid-April. For a winter visit, check how far the road is open and expect to walk from its open end.

At Chasm View, the canyon is about 1,820 feet deep and 1,100 feet across from rim to rim. The Gunnison River is a thin line far below. Here it drops 240 feet per mile, the greatest descent rate in the park.

A very old foundationThe river cuts through about 1.7-billion-year-old Precambrian metamorphic rock.

The river cuts through about 1.7-billion-year-old Precambrian metamorphic rock. The canyon took shape much later: uplift raised the old rock around 60 million years ago, volcanic deposits later buried it, and the Gunnison began cutting through by roughly two million years ago. The drop you see is the result of that long geological setup and a river that still falls sharply through the canyon.
