More about North Chasm View

Why make the detourNorth Chasm View is an overlook on Black Canyon of the Gunnison's North Rim, reached by a 0.

North Chasm View is an overlook on Black Canyon of the Gunnison's North Rim, reached by a 0.3-mile round-trip loop from the end of the North Rim Campground road. The short, unpaved path passes through pinyon-juniper before opening at the rim, about 1,800 feet above the Gunnison River. Keep following the loop to a second overlook with Painted Wall and Serpent Point in view. It's a good way to fit two canyon angles into one short stop.

Take the whole loopThe trail is rocky in places and rated easy to moderate.

The trail is rocky in places and rated easy to moderate. It's not wheelchair accessible, though leashed dogs are allowed. At the first opening, the river far below gives the view its sense of scale; the second overlook adds Painted Wall and Serpent Point.

Why the walls feel so closeAt Chasm View, the canyon is 1,820 feet deep and 1,100 feet wide at rim level.

At Chasm View, the canyon is 1,820 feet deep and 1,100 feet wide at rim level. At river level, its narrowest span is just 40 feet. That 40-foot pinch may not read clearly from above, but it explains why the walls seem to crowd the Gunnison.

A very old cutThe canyon exposes metamorphic rock about 1.

The canyon exposes metamorphic rock about 1.8 billion years old, lifted by the Gunnison Uplift roughly 60 million years ago. Volcanoes spread a cover of newer rock around 30 million years ago. Then, about 2 million years ago, the Gunnison River began cutting through that cover into the ancient rock below.

Look up as well as downThe short trail is also a birding spot.

The short trail is also a birding spot. Swifts and swallows work the canyon air, and raptors sometimes circle above the walls; treat any sighting as a bonus, not a promise.

Getting to the North RimThe trail starts at the end of the one-way North Rim Campground loop.

The trail starts at the end of the one-way North Rim Campground loop. Reaching the North Rim means driving the last seven miles on unpaved Black Canyon Road. The road isn't plowed and closes to vehicles in winter and early spring; it usually reopens in late April or early May and closes around mid-November, with dates depending on conditions.

Services are limited. The campground has vault toilets, and its potable-water fill stations operate only in summer. No food service is listed for the North Rim, so plan your stop without relying on a meal or shoulder-season water.
