Katoomba Falls

Katoomba Falls is a multi-tiered waterfall on the Kedumba River, dropping from the Katoomba escarpment into Jamison Valley. Several viewpoints give different reads of the gorge; the compact Round Walk brings the waterfall, rainforest and Three Sisters into one outing.

The Round Walk is a 1.2 km Grade 3 loop that takes about 45 to 75 minutes. It is well formed and clearly signed, but has many steps. The longer Furber Steps route is 2.2 km return and usually takes one to two hours; it descends steeply through rainforest and climbing back is the hard part. It can link onward toward Scenic World via Federal Pass.

On the Round Walk, Reids Plateau gives an elevated look toward the falls before the path drops by stairs into a shaded gorge. Vanimans Lookout opens onto Katoomba Falls and the Three Sisters, then a cliff-side path reaches Juliet’s Balcony above Witches Leap. The changes in height and view make the short loop feel like more than a single lookout stop.

For the broadest composition, stop at Vanimans Lookout, where the falls and Three Sisters share the view. Reids Plateau offers a higher angle on the waterfall; the lower Furber Steps route brings you closer to the cascades. Stay on the formed track and viewing platforms.

The Kedumba River can run lightly in dry spells, while rain often gives the falls more presence. If the water is low, the gorge, layered cliff face and changing viewpoints still make the walk worthwhile; don’t plan the visit around a guaranteed torrent.

The Katoomba Falls Kiosk near the access area dates to 1921. It is a locally heritage-listed Federation-era structure and a rare surviving example of its kind, adding a bit of Katoomba’s visitor history to the walk.

Spring brings fresh fern shoots along the shaded track, and rosellas and lorikeets are often seen in the area. Pause in the quieter gorge sections and look into the trees rather than watching only the waterfall.

Follow the Scenic World signs from Katoomba; parking is available around Main Road, Scenic World and the kiosk area, and can be limited on busy weekends. A bus from Katoomba railway station reaches Scenic World, about 500 m from the kiosk. Toilets are at Katoomba Falls Reserve and Scenic World; picnic facilities are at Cooks Crossing near the base of the falls. Pets are not allowed on the tracks, except certified assistance animals.
