Wentworth Falls

Wentworth Falls is a multi-tier waterfall on Jamison Creek, with a plunge of about 100 metres toward Jamison Valley. It is one of the Blue Mountains’ headline sights, but this is a walk-in waterfall, not a pull-over view: the official route is 1.4 km return, Grade 3, and takes about 45 minutes to an hour. The stairs make it feel harder than the distance suggests, especially on the way back up. It is a rewarding stop if you want to get close to the falls; it is a poor fit for prams or anyone who needs a wheelchair-accessible path.

Drive via Great Western Highway and Falls Road to Wentworth Falls picnic area. The path first passes Jamison and Wentworth lookouts, then drops by about 200 steps to Fletchers Lookout. Stay on the track and keep children close: the cliffs have hidden edges. The route can be turned into a longer outing on connecting walks, but the short return is enough to reach the waterfall and get back to the picnic area.

Fletchers Lookout gives you the dramatic angle: the falls dropping down the cliff with Jamison Valley opening beyond. A few more minutes of stairs take you to the top, where Jamison Creek flows into a shallow pool before going over the edge. The upper pool and the valley-facing drop feel like two different places, so leave time for both. At Fletchers, frame the waterfall with the valley behind it; at the top, use the creek and pool to give the scene a foreground.

The falls take their name from William Charles Wentworth, one of the leaders of the 1813 expedition across the Blue Mountains. The walk is on Gundungurra Country.

Wentworth Falls sits in the Blue Mountains’ deeply cut sandstone country, where cliffs and gorges channel creeks into waterfalls. Around the picnic-area cliffs, listen for sulphur-crested cockatoos and look out over the valley for peregrine falcons riding the thermals. They are possible sightings, not a promise, but the open cliff setting makes it worth looking up between steps.

The clifftop picnic area has room to spread out among banksias and gum trees, with Jamison Lookout opposite; it works well for a packed lunch before or after the walk. Parking can be tight at busy times, and larger vehicles may have a harder time finding a space. The walk itself has no wheelchair access, and the steep stairs are unsuitable for prams. The approach road is sealed and suitable for 2WD.
