The drive and facilities

The approach crosses Shipley Plateau through bush, small farms and orchards; spring waratahs are a reason to take the drive slowly. Mount Blackheath Road is unsealed and visitors report rough, potholed stretches. There is a car park and picnic tables, so this works as a bring-your-own-food stop. Toilet availability and step-free access are not confirmed; check locally if either matters to your visit.

Mount Blackheath Lookout is a fenced viewing platform at the end of Mount Blackheath Road, high on Shipley Plateau above Blackheath. At about 1,076 metres, it looks north and west across Kanimbla Valley toward the Great Dividing Range. The platform is a short walk from the road-end car park, making this an easy scenic-drive stop rather than a long hike.

Sunset is the standout time here: the outlook opens toward the west, with the valley floor and long escarpment giving the view its layers. The lookout is best for taking in that broad landscape, not for a close-up feature. A wide frame that keeps the valley floor below the escarpment shows the layers of the landscape.

A separate launch ramp sits shortly before the main platform on the approach road. Hang gliders or paragliders may be visible when the weather and flying activity line up, but don't plan the visit around a launch; current operations are uncertain.
