Tucked at Milepost 217.5 near the NC/VA line, Cumberland Knob Visitor Center anchors the quiet Cumberland Knob Recreation Area. It’s modest, peaceful, and steeped in history—the Parkway’s first shovelful of dirt was turned here in 1935. Expect a rustic setting, interpretive signs, and immediate access to trails and shady picnic grounds.

A good spot for birding and casual wildlife watching. Expect songbirds in the woods, wild turkey and deer in the meadows, and salamanders along damp stretches near the creek. Black bears are rare but possible—store food properly in the picnic area.
Cell service is spotty; download maps beforehand. Bring your own food and water bottles (potable water available when facilities are open). If you want big, sweeping vistas, this stop is more about woods, water, and history than grand overlooks.
