Why this trail

If you want a leg-stretcher with a dash of Blue Ridge Parkway history, this easy loop delivers. It’s short, quiet, and anchored by a historic shelter and old concession stand built in the Parkway’s early days. Expect shade, songbirds, and grassy picnic lawns rather than big mountain vistas.

What to expect

This is a paved loop of about 0.5 miles total with roughly 100 feet of elevation change—great for families and casual walkers. It begins beside the gray, historic concession stand at the main picnic area parking lot and wanders through mixed woodlands and open fields. Keep an eye out for an old cemetery and the original shelter overlook along the way. From the picnic area itself, you can catch an eastern view toward Pilot Mountain—best in clear morning light.

Add-on option: Gully Creek

If you want more than a stroll, a separate, adjacent trail drops steeply to Gully Creek with cascades and then climbs back—strenuous and about a 2‑hour commitment. It’s a different experience and not part of the easy paved loop, but it pairs well if you have time and legs for it.

Best time to go

Year-round works here. Spring and summer bring lush foliage and active birdlife; fall colors make the woods pop. In winter, the loop can be a peaceful cold‑weather walk, but watch for icy patches. Facilities at the picnic area are typically seasonal, so plan water/restroom needs accordingly. Weekday mornings are the quietest and have the best soft light for photos of the lawns and stonework.

Tips

• Start or finish with a short wander across the picnic lawns for the Pilot Mountain view.
• This is a perfect picnic-and-walk combo stop—bring a blanket and linger.
• Keep the loop to itself if you want easy; only add Gully Creek if you’re prepared for steeper, slicker terrain.
