A classic Blue Ridge Parkway pullout at Milepost 289.5 near Boone and Blowing Rock, Raven Rock Overlook pairs an easy stop with a big payoff: wide mountain horizons and a broad rock ledge just steps from your car.

Why it’s worth a stop

Most overlooks here face east or south; this one points northwest, which is why locals flock here for the evening show. On clear days the sky opens up for color-drenched sunsets that rival Thunder Hill. You can see layered ridgelines—and yes, some development in the distance—including the Tweetsie Railroad below.

What you’ll see

• A large, flat rock slab (“Raven Rock”) beside the parking area with sweeping mountain views.
• Far‑reaching horizons perfect for sunset photography.
• Occasional wildlife—visitors report deer along the adjacent trail, and you’ll hear/see plenty of birds.

Trail connection

The Mountains‑to‑Sea Trail runs right from the overlook (off the left side of the lot). It’s a handy place to stretch your legs before continuing the drive.

What to know

This is a straightforward stop: pull in, soak up the view, and go. There are no restrooms, water, or picnic tables, and camping isn’t allowed. The view from the lot is essentially the same as from the rock, so you don’t need to scramble to enjoy it.

Best time to visit

• Sunset is the main event—arrive 30–45 minutes early, especially Thursday–Sunday, when the small lot fills quickly.
• For solitude, try sunrise or midweek afternoons.
• Clear days deliver the longest vistas; bring layers if you’re lingering after the sun drops.

Photography tips

Go wide for the big sky, then switch to a short telephoto to compress ridgelines. Stay behind fences and mind your footing near the rock’s edge.
