Flat Top Tower crowns the 4,558-foot summit of Flat Top Mountain in Moses H. Cone Memorial Park. It’s a steel observation tower with proper, full-circle views—rare on the Parkway—reached by a former carriage road that starts at Flat Top Manor. Expect a moderate outing with a big-payoff panorama at the end.
The Hike
From Flat Top Manor, follow the wide, smooth carriage road about 2.6 miles one way (roughly 5–5.3 miles round trip, ~580 feet of gain). The grade is steady but gentle, making it popular with families, runners, and equestrians. You’ll pass meadows and forest, with a scenic meadow viewpoint near the Cone family cemetery en route.
What You’ll See
Climb the tower for unobstructed 360-degree views of the Blue Ridge: on clear days, expect distant ridgelines and named peaks like Grandfather and Mitchell. Along the approach, seasonal wildflowers, old apple trees, and mixed hardwoods keep things interesting, and the estate’s historic character adds charm.
Wildlife
Deer and wild turkeys are common, with plenty of songbirds in the woods and meadows. In spring and summer, look for butterflies and other pollinators along the open stretches.
Logistics and Amenities
Start at Flat Top Manor, where there’s parking, a trail map inside the house, and restrooms at the trailhead area. There are no facilities at the tower itself. Carriage roads are shared with horseback riders; keep right on blind curves. Dogs are welcome on leash. Cell service can be spotty, and there’s no water on the trail.
Know Before You Go
The tower is exposed and often windy—bring a layer even on warm days. If the summit is socked in, the view can vanish. This is a very popular outing, especially on fall weekends; parking can spill onto road shoulders and the route can feel busy.
Best Time to Visit
Weekdays or early mornings are your friend for easier parking and quieter trails. Clear afternoons can deliver gorgeous long-range views, and late-day light is lovely for photos. Fall color season is spectacular but crowded; aim for early or late in the day then.
