Rocky Knob Visitor Center

From here you can access roughly 15 miles of hiking, highlighted by the Rock Castle Gorge National Recreation Trail (a strenuous, scenery‑packed loop with big elevation swings) and the 3‑mile Black Ridge Trail. Expect forested ridges, open fields, and classic Parkway views. If you want an easier day, start the Rock Castle Gorge loop from the campground side to knock out the steepest grades downhill.

Spring brings wildflowers and rhododendron, summer is lush and green, and fall color can be excellent. Birders do well here—warblers, thrushes, and vireos frequent the woods—and you’ll often spot turkey, deer, foxes, and the occasional woodchuck along meadows and edges.

Rocky Knob was among the Parkway’s earliest recreation areas developed in the 1930s. Civilian Conservation Corps work is woven into the landscape, and the broader area has long connected hikers—parts once aligned with early routes of the Appalachian Trail.

Facilities are basic: maps, information, restrooms, parking, and nearby picnic tables with grills. There’s no food, store, gas, or Wi‑Fi here, and services along the Parkway are sparse—arrive fueled and stocked. A potable water spigot is available outside. Backcountry camping in the area requires a permit; the developed campground sits nearby.
