Park at the Rocky Knob Picnic Area in the Rocky Knob Recreation Area on the Blue Ridge Parkway; the loop starts from the picnic area parking.
Do not confuse this loop with the Cumberland Knob picnic loop farther south; this one is at Rocky Knob around MP ~167–169. Natural surface with roots and rocks means it’s not fully accessible; watch footing after rain. Some facilities may be limited in winter.

A short, easy loop circling the Rocky Knob Picnic Area on the Blue Ridge Parkway. It’s about 1.0 mile total (loop), with gentle grades on packed dirt and some gravel, plus occasional roots and rocks. The setting mixes shady hardwood forest and open meadows, with periodic ridge-top views and classic Parkway scenery.
Who it’s for
Families, road-trippers, and anyone wanting a low-commitment stroll right by the car. This is the “easy walk” at Rocky Knob—very different from the long, strenuous Rock Castle Gorge route that drops off the ridge. If you want a bit more, you can link nearby trails (like Black Ridge) for a longer outing.
Scenery, flora, and wildlife
Expect rolling ridges, open grassy knolls, and forested sections. In spring and summer, look for wildflowers and mountain laurel in the area. The picnic loop edges are good for casual birding—keep an eye (and ear) out for woodpeckers, warblers, and soaring hawks.
Facilities and logistics
The loop encircles a well-maintained picnic area with tables and restrooms, making it an easy add-on to a Parkway stop. Pets are allowed on leash. No permits or fees are required for this walk.

This is a mellow nature walk, not a destination hike for solitude or challenge. Also, be sure you’re heading to the Rocky Knob Recreation Area (Virginia) and not the Cumberland Knob area farther south—easy to mix up when planning.
