This is the “easy walk” at Rocky Knob—very different from the long, strenuous Rock Castle Gorge route that drops off the ridge. If you want a bit more, you can link nearby trails (like Black Ridge) for a longer outing.

Expect rolling ridges, open grassy knolls, and forested sections. In spring and summer, look for wildflowers and mountain laurel in the area. The picnic loop edges are good for casual birding—keep an eye (and ear) out for woodpeckers, warblers, and soaring hawks.

This is a mellow nature walk, not a destination hike for solitude or challenge. Also, be sure you’re heading to the Rocky Knob Recreation Area (Virginia) and not the Cumberland Knob area farther south—easy to mix up when planning.
