The Saddle Overlook

Overview

Perched around Milepost 168 in the Rocky Knob district, The Saddle Overlook sits on a ridge between two high points—hence the “saddle.” At roughly 3,388 feet, it delivers broad panoramas in multiple directions, which is rarer than your typical single-aspect pullout.

Why It’s Special

Most overlooks force you to pick sunrise or sunset. This one gives you both. Look east across “The Saddle,” then pivot to the west for Buffalo Mountain and long Blue Ridge and Piedmont vistas. It’s a stellar stop for photographers who like to chase changing light.

Views & Photo Tips

• West view (Buffalo Mountain): best in the morning when the light is kinder to the scene.
• East view (toward The Saddle): best in the afternoon as the sun swings around.
• If you’re here at golden hour, you can catch sunrise on one side and sunset on the other—few places let you do that without moving the car.

Trails & How to Use the Stop

From the parking area, you can wander to an open field for more vantage points or hop straight onto the Rock Castle Gorge Trail for a longer outing. It’s an easy place to pair a quick scenic stop with a legit hike.

Wildlife

This is a listed birding site. Fall brings raptor migration—broad-winged hawks are the headliners, with chances for osprey, bald eagles, Cooper’s and sharp-shinned hawks, red-tailed hawks, and American kestrels. Spring and summer add indigo buntings, goldfinches, chipping sparrows, towhees, gray catbirds, plus butterflies like eastern tiger swallowtails around blooming milkweeds and asters.

Logistics

It’s a standard Parkway pullout with parking and trails but no on-site facilities. For restrooms and picnic tables, continue to Rocky Knob Picnic Area around MP 169. Cell service can be spotty, and shade is limited—pack water and sun protection.

Best Time to Visit

Open 24 hours. For crowds and lighting, aim for sunrise or late afternoon on weekdays. Weekends see the usual midday swell. Photographers should time west-facing scenes for morning and the east-facing view for afternoon; fall migration days are a bonus for birders.
