Rocky Knob Campground

Overview

Tucked into rolling meadows and hardwood forest around milepost 167.1, Rocky Knob Campground is the Parkway’s low-key basecamp for hikers and road-trippers who want peace over polish. Expect a traditional, rustic vibe with fewer crowds than the Parkway’s busier hubs and easy access to scenic overlooks right out of camp.

Campsites & Facilities

Sites accommodate tents and RVs and come with the essentials: picnic table, fire ring/grill, and a lantern pole. Restrooms and drinking water are available, but there are no showers and amenities are otherwise minimal. Plan on a classic national-park-style experience—simple, quiet, and scenic.

Trails Right Nearby

This is prime hiking territory. The strenuous Rock Castle Gorge Loop starts near the campground and delivers a full day of gorge views, wildflowers, streams, and historic farm remnants. For something shorter, head to Saddle Overlook and walk to the Rocky Knob summit, where you’ll find an old shelter tied to the area’s early trail history.

Nature & Night Skies

Deer, wild turkeys, hawks, woodpeckers, and a chorus of songbirds are common around camp and along the meadows and ridgelines. This is bear country—store food properly. On clear nights, the “endless night skies” are a standout feature here; bring a warm layer and linger after dusk.

What Makes It Different

Compared to more developed Parkway campgrounds, Rocky Knob leans into solitude and scenery over amenities. It’s often the place that still has sites when others are full, and it sits right amid pastoral views with classic curvy Parkway drives in both directions.

Best Time to Visit

• Spring and early summer: Wildflowers and cooler temps, lighter midweek crowds.
• Peak summer: Warm days for hiking and reliably great stargazing on clear nights.
• Fall: Spectacular foliage; arrive early on weekends as sites go faster.

For photography, hit nearby overlooks at sunrise or late golden hour; nights are best for starry skies.

Good to Know

Weather shifts fast at this elevation—fog and showers roll in quickly. Cell service is unreliable, so download maps beforehand and check current Parkway and campground conditions on the official NPS site before you go.
