Rock Castle Gorge Trail

This is a full loop, not a short overlook walk. Expect steep, rocky grades and a challenging elevation profile, with the route ranging from about 1,700 feet at the confluence of Rock Castle and Little Rock Castle Creeks to 3,572 feet at Rocky Knob. The lower approach includes a rough gated fire-road section, while the upper route follows the green-blazed trail near Rocky Knob. Allow roughly 6–7 hours for the complete hike, depending on pace, stops, and conditions.

Rock Castle Creek, hardwood cove forest, mountain laurel, open meadows, boulder fields, and long views toward the Piedmont shape the loop. The route passes evidence of historic homesites and a rustic shelter associated with the former Appalachian Trail alignment. The large white Austin House is privately owned and is not open to visitors. Spring wildflowers and migrating songbirds are notable, and wildlife may include wild turkey, red fox, woodchuck, white-tailed deer, and bobcat.

Use the lower East Trailhead parking at the end of the National Park Service fire lane, or begin from Rocky Knob Campground for an easier direction. The visitor center near Rocky Knob’s picnic area and the campground can provide maps when open; services may be seasonal. A permit is required for the designated primitive campsite in Rock Castle Gorge. Treat stream water, carry enough food and water for a full day, and use trekking poles or sturdy footwear on steep, wet, or rocky sections. Dogs should remain leashed where permitted, and hikers should stay on the signed route around fences, stiles, and private property.
