Burn O’Vat is an open-roofed granite pothole in Vat Gorge, about 18 metres across, with the Burn O’Vat stream and waterfall running through it. A waymarked path of about 500 metres leads from the visitor-centre car park to the feature. The surprise comes at the end: a narrow crack in the rock opens into a round chamber. It is a memorable short stop if you are comfortable stepping over uneven rock; the entrance is the part that needs care.

Most of the approach is a firm path, but getting inside means crossing uneven stones beside running water and squeezing through a narrow cleft. The rocks can be slippery when wet, and the Vat itself is not wheelchair accessible. Wear shoes with grip and turn back if the water or footing makes the crossing feel unsafe. Dogs are welcome; from April through July, keep them on a short lead or close control for nesting birds.

Follow the water, then look backWater echoes around the granite walls.

Water echoes around the granite walls. The waterfall’s flow changes with rainfall and snowmelt, so it may be a trickle in a dry spell and fuller after wet weather. For a photo, look back from beside the waterfall toward the narrow entrance and the jumble of fallen granite blocks; that view shows the chamber’s shape better than a close shot of the stream.

Around 16,000 years ago, meltwater from a retreating ice sheet drove rocks and gravel in a swirling current through the burn. Their grinding motion enlarged an initial hollow into the broad pothole. Its smooth, rising granite walls and gravel floor are exposed to the sky, giving the Vat its cauldron-like form.

The reserve visitor centre is the natural starting point, with displays about the area’s geology, habitats and wildlife, public toilets and picnic benches reached by a surfaced path. The Vat is a short out-and-back from there; four signed walks also let you add a longer loop. Bring food and water if you plan to keep walking; the picnic benches by the visitor centre make a handy break before you head out.

Longer routes lead toward Loch Kinord, whose hollow formed when a stranded block of glacial ice melted. Gravel ridges nearby were left by streams flowing beneath the ice. The reserve’s wetlands support dragonflies in summer, and otters are a possible winter sighting, though wildlife is never guaranteed.
