Insh Marshes

Insh Marshes is a 10 km² wetland on the River Spey floodplain between Kingussie and Kincraig. Start at the Invertromie entrance for a lookout over pools and reed beds, then a loop through birch woodland and down to the River Tromie. The full walk is about 4.5 km and two hours; if you have less time, the nearby Lookout gives you the broad marsh view without the whole circuit.

The route climbs from the car park to the Lookout, follows the upper woodland edge, then drops to Tromiebridge meadow and the river before returning along part of the Speyside Way. Detours lead to bird hides. The paths are unsurfaced, narrow in places, soft and uneven, so this is not a smooth, step-free walk even though the entrance has accessible parking and a picnic bench.

The marsh floods naturally several times a year, so pools and reflections shift with the water. From the Lookout's roof terrace, frame a stretch of water in front of the reed beds with the hills beyond; the reflection changes with water level and cloud, so it is never a guaranteed effect.

RSPB identifies curlew, lapwing, redshank and snipe among the breeding waders here. Hides give you somewhere to scan the pools, and roe deer may appear along the wooded edge. Sightings vary, so this suits a slow walk and patient looking more than a quick promise of a particular bird.

The wet ground holds water and releases it slowly, helping buffer floods and replenish groundwater. Farming altered parts of the marsh in the 18th and 19th centuries; some wet fields later returned to marsh as agriculture declined. RSPB acquired land here in 1973, and the reserve became a National Nature Reserve in 2005. Restoration work in 2022 placed nine spruce trunks in the River Tromie to make pools and vary the riverbed for fish habitat while slowing flood peaks.

The entrance car park has 12 spaces, including two Blue Badge spaces, and an adapted picnic bench; benches sit along the trails. There are no toilets, café, shop or staffed visitor centre on site. Kingussie, about 1.5 miles away, is the nearest place for food, drink and toilets. Keep dogs on a short lead during the ground-nesting bird season, 1 April to 15 August, and where livestock are grazing; barbecues are prohibited.
