Ruthven Barracks

Ruthven Barracks is a roofless 18th-century government fort on a natural mound at the western end of Insh Marshes, about a mile south of Kingussie. Two barrack blocks still stand inside their defensive walls. The open rooms and narrow window openings help make the garrison easy to picture, making this a strong short Highland history stop.

The surviving layout includes two barrack blocks, a stable block and the enclosing defensive wall. You can walk around and through much of the roofless complex, looking into the rooms and across the courtyard. A period account gives the garrison accommodation for about 120 soldiers and 28 horses, which gives a sense of the scale of this military post.

Government troops built Ruthven after the Jacobite rising of 1715, under George I, to hold the region and enforce the Disarming Act. Three military roads associated with General Wade converged here, making the mound a useful place to control movement through the Highlands. A Jacobite attack failed in 1745; the stronger force the following year took the barracks.

On 17 April 1746, the day after Culloden, about 2,000 Jacobites gathered at Ruthven intending to keep fighting. Prince Charles Edward Stuart then ordered them to disperse. Before leaving, they burned the barracks; it was never reoccupied. The roofless walls remain as a record of that final, violent gathering.

A castle stood on the mound before the barracks. It was connected with the Comyn Lords and Alexander Stewart, known as the Wolf of Badenoch. In 1689, Bonnie Dundee’s forces captured and burned the earlier castle, long before the Jacobite army returned to Ruthven.

From the top of the mound, look out across the lower ground and Insh Marshes. For a photo, keep a piece of the rough stone wall in the foreground; it gives the broad view a sense of scale and shows how the barracks sit above the marsh.
