Trail guide
Ben Vuirich Circuit is a 14.25-mile (22.75 km) loop from the Loch Moraig car park, across open hill and back. It climbs about 673 m and takes 7.5–8 hours. The summit has a trig point inside a windshelter cairn, with a rare view of Loch Loch and a glimpse up the Lairig Ghru; Creag nan Gobhar opens south toward the Lomond Hills. This is a hard, full-day hill walk with boggy, pathless heather and demanding navigation.
Leave the car park along the short tarmac section and estate track, then cross the bridge in Glen Girnaig and pick up a faint grassy line through a field. It climbs the southern flank of Meall Breac before fading on the boggy, pathless slopes of Coire Buidhe Mòr. The approach firms up near Creag nan Gobhar, where the view opens south toward the Lomond Hills. Beyond it, the narrow ridge path can disappear again in a wet bealach before the final climb.
From the summit, descend west over open heather, keeping north of Loch Valigan and its boggy ground. Cross the head of the glen by Allt Nead an Eoin, then follow the old Blair Atholl–Strathardle route to the clearer path on Sròn na h-Innearach. At the summit, frame Loch Loch down the glen; the water helps show the valley’s depth.
A narrow trod drops WSW to the substantial Allt Girnaig. If the burn is in spate, stay on the main path to rejoin the outward route above Shinagag, adding roughly 2 km. Start at Loch Moraig car park at the end of the public stretch of Monzie Road; parking is chargeable. Dogs are welcome if kept under control. From 1 August to 20 October, check Atholl Estates’ Hillphone and plan around stalking activity: its all-season advice for Ben Vuirich points to northern approaches, while this circuit starts at Loch Moraig.
