Trail guide
Struan Kirk Walk is a 1.5-mile loop from the B847 near Calvine; allow about an hour. It pairs views into the River Garry gorge with a visit to the remote Struan church. This is the short kirk circuit, not the much longer Old Struan Coffin Road.
Expect grassy and earthy paths, large roots and a short road section. The loop has two narrow kiss gates, one step and a rocky section to clamber over. Gradients are mostly gentle, but the route looks down steep drops to the river. Its official grade is strenuous, so judge the rough section and gorge edge rather than relying on the short mileage alone. For a photograph, keep the River Garry in frame from the path so the river and wooded gorge read together; do not edge toward the drop to compose it.
The church stands near the meeting of the River Garry and Errochty Water. The present building dates to 1828 and replaced an earlier kirk just to the south. Three carved Pictish stones are associated with its churchyard; one is kept inside for protection, so do not assume the interior will be open. A mound just northwest of the church is sometimes called a motte, but its purpose is disputed; an assembly-place interpretation remains a proposal.
Use the B847 access below the railway bridge near Calvine. The route map points to local side roads for careful parking rather than a dedicated trail car park; no trailhead toilets or water are marked. Dogs are welcome in the park. Keep them close to heel or on a short lead near livestock and wildlife, and follow any signs.
