Alcove Spring Trail

Alcove Spring Trail is an 11.2-mile out-and-back from the signed trailhead on Upheaval Dome Road, down from Island in the Sky through Trail Canyon to the base of Moses and Zeus. The park lists 6–7 hours and calls it strenuous. It’s a full-day choice for hikers who want a real canyon descent, a huge sandstone alcove, and towers at the end; it isn’t a quick stop. The official route turns around at the Moses Trailhead. Continuing down the wash toward Taylor Camp or climbing toward the towers adds distance.

The first mile is the hard part going down: rocky steps and switchbacks drop off the mesa. The trail passes a broad, amphitheater-shaped alcove carved into a streaked sandstone wall, then follows a ledge and eases into Trail Canyon. The alcove is the signature stop. From the ledge, include some of the trail below the recess in a photo so its scale comes through.

Around mile three, the route reaches the normally dry wash. The grade gets easier, but soft dirt can make the walking slower than it looks. Cliffs frame the canyon, and the spires come into view during the final mile. Save some energy for the way back: you retrace the wash and climb the same rocky steps and switchbacks to the mesa.

At the Trail Canyon–Taylor Canyon merge, watch for the cairned exit from the wash toward Moses Trailhead. It’s easy to walk past; continuing down the wash leads toward Taylor Camp instead. Stay with the cairned route for the Moses and Zeus turnaround and the 11.2-mile round trip.

There’s no refill point identified for this route, so plan to carry your water from the start. The park recommends 1 liter per person per hour for this hike. Dogs aren’t allowed. Overnight backcountry trips need a permit. Snow or ice can cover the upper rocky section in winter; traction devices may be useful.
