Fort Hill

From Route 6, turn at the brown Fort Hill sign onto Governor Prence Road and follow it to 70 Fort Hill Road, across from Captain Penniman House. Small parking areas serve the loop; an upper clearing gives a marsh view without walking the full circuit. The access has a 20-foot vehicle-length limit, so check that before bringing a long RV. You can also reach the trail from Hemenway Landing just north on Route 6; restrooms are listed there. No food service is listed at Fort Hill, so bring water and any snack you want.

The loop crosses open fields and reaches the bluff above the marsh, where channels and grass flats spread out toward the coast. Include one of the tidal channels in the foreground and the distant ocean or dunes beyond it to show the landscape's depth. At Indian Rock, also called Skiff Hill, early Native Americans sharpened tools on the stone; a covered pavilion and picnic table make it a natural pause before continuing.

Nauset settlers established their community here in 1644 and built a meetinghouse near this high ground. The hill's name suggests a fort, but whether one was ever built remains uncertain; it may simply refer to the hill's defensive position above the settlement. The former meetinghouse site lies beside the trail, which makes the open rise part of a much older cultural landscape than its quiet fields first suggest.

The marsh was useful as well as scenic. People cut salt hay and peat there, and by about 1830 salt-making vats lined parts of the shore. Eastham's early settlers cleared much of the area's forest, and dairy farming continued at Fort Hill into the 1940s. The pastures remain open as a reminder of that farming history.

Visitors often notice birds and butterflies along the loop, and the fields can flower in season. Biting insects are a recurring warm-weather nuisance, so insect repellent is sensible if you plan to linger. The walk is short enough to fit between other stops, but the broad view and the stories attached to the fields reward taking a few minutes off the path.
