More about Ocracoke Island Discovery Center

Start here in OcracokeThe Ocracoke Island Discovery Center is the National Park Service visitor center in Ocracoke…

The Ocracoke Island Discovery Center is the National Park Service visitor center in Ocracoke village, near the Cedar Island and Swan Quarter ferry terminals. It is a useful first stop for getting your bearings before you explore the island: pick up a park map and newspaper, or ask a staff member about ranger programs, lighthouse climbs, local weather, and the seashore’s history and resources. If you are arriving by ferry and still deciding what to do, this is a good place to sort out a plan before driving farther on NC-12.

An orientation stopThink of it as a practical stop rather than a destination that needs a long visit.

Think of it as a practical stop rather than a destination that needs a long visit. Maps, park information, and a conversation with staff are the main reasons to come in. The building also has historical and interpretive material, but its exhibit lineup has changed: the slideshow and children’s activity corner described when it reopened in 2021 were temporary, so do not plan around finding those exact displays. The renovated building took the Discovery Center name in 2021; older references may still call it the Ocracoke Island Visitor Center.

At 38 Irvin Garrish Highway, just off NC-12, the center is easy to fit into the village and ferry part of your trip. You will find accessible flush restrooms, an accessible bottle-filling station, and parking for cars, boat trailers, buses, and RVs. Its operation follows the season and can be intermittent in winter, so check the current schedule if the stop is important to your plans. Staff can also point you toward current ranger-program details; those schedules can change from year to year.
