Plan your stop

Before you go

Best time to go

The museum and shop typically open in April and close in early December, but days and hours can shift with volunteer coverage, so check current details with the Preservation Society before making this a fixed stop. Admission is free; donations support the group's preservation work. Summer porch talks and storytelling sometimes add another local voice, though they're not a daily program to plan around. If you want context for Ocracoke's history and culture, this is a worthwhile stop; if you're focused on beaches and outdoor time, it's easy to save the indoor visit for another day.

Ocracoke Preservation Society Museum is an island-history museum in the David Williams House, a two-story home built around 1900 in Ocracoke village. Its first-floor rooms hold exhibits about the island and the people who shaped it, including maritime history, shipwrecks, fishing traditions, island crafts and everyday life. This is a room-by-room visit in a historic home, not a big museum campus. A video of local speakers using the Ocracoke Brogue is a good way to hear the island's distinctive dialect. The shop carries local books, crafts and keepsakes.

The building is part of the storyDavid Williams, who owned the house, was the first chief of Ocracoke's U.S. Coast Guard station.

David Williams, who owned the house, was the first chief of Ocracoke's U.S. Coast Guard station. When the house faced demolition, it was moved to its present site on National Park Service property in 1989 and restored. The Preservation Society has operated the free-admission museum here since 1992, and the house and surrounding historic-district property are on the National Register of Historic Places. The building gives the island's history exhibits a direct connection to the people and working life they describe.
