Overview
Tucked into the historic Scorpion Ranch complex on Santa Cruz Island, Scorpion Adobe is a tangible slice of the island’s ranching past. It sits just inland from Scorpion Anchorage and near the Upper Scorpion Campground, making it one of the first cultural landmarks you’ll encounter after stepping off the boat. Think sunlit adobe walls, old corrals, and working‑era outbuildings framed by pepper, palm, fig, and Monterey cypress planted by ranchers.
This is one of the most intact ranching landscapes in the islands. The National Park Service preserves the area so visitors can connect with a unique chapter of island history—one that ran through the Gherini family’s tenure and ended when the last private interest was acquired in 1997. The adobe and its neighbors tell that story right where it happened.

Expect a compact cluster of early‑20th‑century ranch structures: the adobe itself alongside the bunkhouse, meat and implement sheds, and corrals. The setting is a flat valley floor with Scorpion Creek threading through and rugged slopes rising toward Montañon Ridge. It’s a great place to slow down, wander the buildings, and snap photos before or after your hikes.
Keep an eye out for island foxes nosing around the ranch area, along with scrub jays and sun-basking lizards. Down by the coast near the anchorage, it’s not unusual to spot dolphins—and seasonally, migrating whales—while you’re exploring nearby.
Ranching here dates back to the 19th century, with sheep operations shaping Scorpion Valley for decades. The adobe and adjacent structures reflect that working landscape. After federal acquisition in the late 1990s, the park made preservation and interpretation a priority so the ranch era remains part of every visit.
