Scorpion Anchorage to Cavern Point

From the landing at Scorpion Anchorage, follow the signed path west toward the Scorpion Ranch Visitor Center and campground. The Cavern Point trail climbs steeply at first, with stairs and switchbacks, then levels out near the coastal bluff. The National Park Service recommends starting near campground site #22 and hiking clockwise to avoid the steepest climb; the loop then descends toward Scorpion Beach and returns to the anchorage. The route is officially rated moderate. Allow about 1.5 hours at a relaxed pace, longer if you stop for views or wildlife.

Cavern Point overlooks the Pacific and one of Santa Cruz Island’s large sea caves; the cave itself is not visible from the trail. The route passes the historic Scorpion Ranch complex and campground, with coastal bluffs, island vegetation, and wide views toward Anacapa and the mainland. Seasonal whale viewing is possible from the point, and island foxes may be seen near the ranch and campground.

There is no public road parking on Santa Cruz Island. Arrive by an authorized boat or ferry at Scorpion Anchorage and check the operator’s schedule and reservation requirements before traveling. Carry all water: the exposed loop has little or no shade. Stay well back from bluff edges, use care on the steep and rocky sections, and secure food because island foxes are accustomed to searching around camps.

Pets are not allowed in Channel Islands National Park to protect island wildlife. The North Bluff Trail continues west from the Cavern Point area toward Potato Harbor, but that longer extension is not part of this 2.0-mile loop.
