Moderate

This classic Santa Cruz Island sampler is a total 4.5-mile loop starting steps from Scorpion Anchorage. Expect a moderate-to-strenuous outing with about 750–800 feet of gain, a mix of dirt singletrack and rocky sections, and long stretches of full sun. It’s a rewarding half‑day that blends coastal panoramas, island wildlife, and a quirky bit of history.
Hike it clockwise for the smoother experience: begin on the old ranch road toward the ridge for a steadier climb, enjoy sweeping views over the Pacific with Anacapa Island and, on clear days, the mainland, then descend the steeper, looser Scorpion Canyon trail back toward the anchorage. About halfway up high, a short signed spur visits an abandoned 1966 oil well—an intact relic from a failed drilling attempt that produced water, not oil. Near the loop’s end, pass remnants of Scorpion Ranch, including ranching structures that hint at the island’s pastoral past.
Footing ranges from smooth dirt to rocky and uneven in spots, especially on the canyon descent—trekking poles help, particularly after rain. Vegetation shifts from chaparral and open grassland to a lusher canyon bottom. Keep your eyes peeled for the endemic Island Scrub‑Jay and the diminutive, bold Island Fox, especially around lower canyon/camp areas. There’s little shade on the ridge—sun and wind exposure are part of the deal.
It’s hikeable year‑round, but late fall through spring offers milder temps and typically clearer views. In summer, start early or later in the afternoon to beat heat and find a bit more solitude. Midday light can be harsh for photography; golden hours flatter the coastline and ridge.
There’s no on‑island driving; most visitors ferry to Scorpion Anchorage and walk from the landing directly onto the loop. Water and restrooms are at the anchorage/campground only—none on the trail—so fill up before you go and pack out all trash. Cell service is unreliable to nonexistent. No pets are allowed on the island (service animals excepted). If you’re camping, use the fox boxes—those little canids are curious and crafty.
If you want more miles or variety, longer loops from the same area link Smugglers Road and Potato Harbor for bigger views and more ridge time.
Not the easiest loop on the island, but absolutely worth it for the panoramas, the oil‑well oddity, and the chance to see endemic wildlife. Go clockwise, bring sun protection and plenty of water, and you’ll finish smiling back at the beach.
No on-island parking. Arrive by ferry or private boat to Scorpion Anchorage; the loop begins steps from the landing near the campground.
Exposed sun and wind, no potable water on the trail, and a steep, loose descent—go clockwise, carry ample water and sun protection, use trekking poles if needed, expect no cell service, and pack out all trash.
