Crater Lake Lodge

Crater Lake Lodge is a historic hotel on the caldera rim at Rim Village, nearly 1,000 feet above the lake. It has 71 rooms, including six accessible rooms, but you don't need to stay overnight to visit when the lodge is open. If you're already at Rim Village, make time for the Great Hall, the lake-facing porch, and the lodge-history exhibits.

The rear porch looks out over Crater Lake and its steep caldera walls, with rocking chairs set along the view. It's an easy place to slow down between overlooks and watch the light change across the water. Visitors also report enjoying sunset, sunrise, and the night sky from the deck.

Inside, the Great Hall's native-stone fireplace gives the lodge its center of gravity. Ground-floor exhibits west of the lobby trace the lodge's history and early tourism around the lake. You can pair a look around with a meal in the full-service dining room.

The dining room serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner during the operating season. Dinner reservations are encouraged, so book ahead if you have a fixed plan. Menu details change; think of this as a seasonal meal stop rather than a place to count on year-round.

Construction began in 1909 after park advocate William Gladstone Steel pressed for a lodge at the rim. Portland developer Alfred Parkhurst took on the project, and the lodge opened in 1915. The Rim Village Historic District was added to the National Register in 1997, with the lodge among its six primary buildings.

The lodge typically operates from mid-May into early October, with snow levels affecting the season, so check current dates before planning around a room or meal. Guests repeatedly praise the location and historic character, while reports on room upkeep and temperature comfort are mixed. Its great advantage is being right on the rim; its older rooms aren't a promise of modern hotel polish.
