Wizard Island

Wizard Island is a volcanic cinder cone on Crater Lake’s west side, sitting inside the much larger caldera left by Mount Mazama. From the rim it looks like a green, pointed island; landing there adds a rough shoreline and the climb to a second, smaller summit crater. I’d plan the boat outing when you want more than a quick look from shore: the island itself is the payoff.

When summer boat service is operating, concessioner boats carry visitors from Cleetwood Cove to Wizard Island. There’s no road access. Reaching the lakeshore already takes effort: Cleetwood Cove Trail is steep, about 1.1 miles round trip with 700 feet of elevation change. Add the island’s own rocky uphill route and this is a real outing, not a quick hop off the boat. Bring enough food and water for the trip; you shouldn’t count on buying anything on the island. Composting toilets are available there when boat facilities are operating.

The cone rises 767 feet above the lake. Its summit holds a second crater about 300 feet across and 90 feet deep, with a path around the rim. The route climbs over rough volcanic ground, so expect uneven footing and a proper uphill walk rather than a stroll along the water. From above, the little crater gives you a close look at the island’s own volcanic shape.

Mount Mazama once stood roughly 12,000 feet tall. A major eruption about 7,700 years ago emptied part of the volcano and its summit collapsed; as the caldera filled with water, later eruptions built Wizard Island. It’s a cinder cone nested inside the much larger volcano that made the lake. Three other volcanic features grew underwater as Crater Lake filled; the youngest, Rhyodacite Dome, formed about 5,000 years ago.

You don’t have to land to see Wizard Island: rim viewpoints look across to its cone and the rocky shoreline. For a broad photo, set the island against the blue lake and high caldera wall; from the summit, turn back toward the rim and down into the smaller crater. Lake color shifts with cloud cover, wind, and the sun’s angle, so the same view can look strikingly different as conditions change.
