Custer State Park Visitor Center

This is the park’s main orientation hub, opened in 2016 at the junction of US 16A and Wildlife Loop Road near the State Game Lodge. It’s modern, bright, and purpose-built to get you dialed into the park quickly—think solid exhibits, practical advice, and a short film that’s actually worth your time.

• A focused set of exhibits on the park’s wildlife—especially the free‑roaming bison herd—plus geology and human history.
• A 100‑seat theater showing a well-produced, 20‑minute film (“Spirit of Tatanka”) narrated by Kevin Costner.
• Staff who actively help you plan hikes, scenic drives, and where to look for wildlife that day. The big 3D relief map is clutch for plotting routes.

Why Start Here

Location, intel, and efficiency. You’re steps from Wildlife Loop Road, Iron Mountain Road, and an easy hop to other highlights. Rangers and staff can brief you on current road conditions, closures, and where animals have been spotted recently. If you only have a short visit, this stop pays off.

Wildlife Context

You won’t likely see bison from the lobby, but this is the best launchpad for the Wildlife Loop—prime territory for bison, pronghorn, deer, turkeys, coyotes, and prairie dogs, with occasional elk or bighorn sheep sightings. Ask staff for the latest herd locations before you roll.

• Restrooms are clean; parking accommodates most vehicles.
• There’s no food service here—grab meals elsewhere in the park or nearby towns.

• Aim for opening time in summer (around 8 am) to breeze through before the midday crush.
• Late afternoon (after 4 pm) is the next best window.
• Weekdays are calmer than weekends.
• For photography, catch the morning or late-day light, then head straight onto the Wildlife Loop for golden-hour wildlife.
