Hiking Sagamore Creek Loop

Is this your kind of loop?Sagamore Creek Loop is a 3.6-mile circuit from Alexander Road Trailhead at Sagamore Creek.

Sagamore Creek Loop is a 3.6-mile circuit from Alexander Road Trailhead at Sagamore Creek. It drops into the steep, wooded Sagamore Creek gorge, passes Linda Falls and a second, unnamed cascade, then climbs the north side back to the lot. Allow about two hours. Do it for a rugged creek-valley walk; the mileage hides a real descent, stream crossings and a climb back out.

Head south from the lot on the paved Bike and Hike Trail, then take the right-hand turn toward Linda Falls. The path follows the southern rim before dropping to Canal Road. Cross Sagamore Creek and follow the return trail into the woods; the Frazee House is a useful landmark near the creek. The loop leaves the shared bridle section and climbs the north slope back to Alexander Road.

What the gorge addsThe steep wooded slopes fold into deep ravines, with several small waterfalls along the creek.

The steep wooded slopes fold into deep ravines, with several small waterfalls along the creek. Linda Falls is the named one; a second cascade is unnamed. Both are seasonal, so treat flowing water as a bonus rather than a guarantee. The low rock shelves and shallow stream make the best photo stop. Step back enough to keep the creek around the water; a tight crop loses the setting.

The climb backThis is not a smooth, level park path.

This is not a smooth, level park path. Expect uneven natural tread, a steep drop to the creek and a climb back out. The crossings are the main footing question, especially at the ford. Hikers share a short bridle-trail section with horses, so yield to riders. Pets are allowed on leashes no longer than eight feet.
