Overview

About Beaver Marsh Walk

Why go

  • Flat, firm access to several marsh viewing platforms and benches.
  • Tactile exhibits and a memorable wetland recovery story.

Heads up

  • A very short outing on a busy, shared Towpath.
  • Rain, spring mud, snow or ice can limit the accessible surface.
The Beaver Marsh Walk is a short, nearly level out-and-back from Ira Trailhead to the Beaver Marsh viewing boardwalk. Plan on about 0.6 miles round trip, counting the access connector and the return; allow roughly 20 to 30 minutes if you stop to look for wildlife. Follow the connector to the Towpath, turn left/north, and retrace your steps from the boardwalk. The quarter-mile figure often used for this walk describes the northbound Towpath leg; the complete line from the trailhead is a little longer. The firm route is normally wheelchair- and stroller-accessible, though weather can change that.

Parking

Use the Ira Trailhead lot at 3801 Riverview Road, then follow the short connector to the Towpath. The lot often fills on fair-weather weekends by noon. Picnic tables, a kiosk and restroom access are at Ira; food and drinking water on the route were not found.

Safety

The Towpath is shared with cyclists and can be congested; keep right and watch for passing traffic. Heavy rain can leave sections flooded or muddy, especially in spring, and snow or ice is not cleared, so accessible travel is weather-dependent.

The approach follows the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath through a green, low-lying stretch before reaching viewing platforms over the marsh. Benches and tactile exhibits make it easy to linger. Early morning and evening are the best times to look for active wildlife; beavers are possible, not promised. In late spring, watch for turtles on floating logs; early summer brings nesting birds, and the wetland is also home to muskrats, frogs, waterfowl, herons and otters. From the boardwalk, frame the walkway as it leads out over the water, with lily pads and marsh plants in view.

A marsh made by people and beaversThe wetland is a 70-acre comeback story.

The wetland is a 70-acre comeback story. The area was first farmed and later used as an auto salvage yard. During a major 1984 cleanup, volunteers removed car parts and other debris; after the land became part of the park, beavers returned and their dams helped hold water in the old canal and restore wetland habitat. You can still see dams and stick-built lodge walls from the boardwalk. The marsh is now one of the park's richest places for watching wildlife.
