Overview

About Fairy Glen (Ffos Anoddun)

Why stop

  • Mossy gorge, rushing water, and close-up woodland scenery

Heads up

  • Slippery rock steps are awkward in wet weather
A short, steep path drops you into a narrow wooded gorge where the Afon Conwy pushes between moss-covered rock. The scale is intimate and close up: dark water, polished boulders, ferns and dripping green on every side, with the sound of the river filling the whole cleft. After a day of wide valley views, this is a complete change of scale for very little walking.

Before you go

Best time to go

Early morning or later in the day usually means fewer people on the narrow path and softer light among the trees. Midday sun can be harsh and patchy through the canopy. The main drawbacks are the tight parking, the short length of the visit, and the compact viewing spots, which can feel crowded on busy afternoons. After heavy rain the river is more dramatic and the footing is worse.

Getting there

  • The access point is a gate and small car park beside the Fairy Glen Hotel on the A470, roughly two miles south of Betws-y-Coed.
  • Parking is limited, so it fills quickly on fine weekends and in school holidays.
  • Expect a small cash access contribution, so carry coins.
  • From the gate it is usually a 5 to 15 minute walk down to the river.
  • Some visitors combine the gorge with a walk in the Conwy Falls area nearby.

  • Cascades, rapids and swirling pools: the river drops through the gorge in a series of chutes and churning basins along the rock, so plan your visit around that kind of water feature rather than one single large waterfall.
  • Very green surroundings: moss, lichen and overhanging trees make the gorge feel enclosed and shaded.
  • A compact site: you reach the riverside, look, take photographs, and climb back up.
  • Good for photography of water, rock texture and reflections, with a slightly longer exposure if you have a way to steady the camera.
Terrain, time and footwearAllow 30 minutes to an hour for a straightforward visit, with a modest climb on the way back up.
  • Allow 30 minutes to an hour for a straightforward visit, with a modest climb on the way back up.
  • The descent is the demanding part: steep, uneven rock steps, loose stone and tree roots.
  • Rock and steps become genuinely slippery when wet, and the gorge stays damp even after dry spells.
  • Wear boots or trainers with real grip. Sandals and smooth soles slide easily on the wet rock.
  • Unsuitable for wheelchairs and buggies, and hard going for anyone unsteady on steep, awkward ground.
Safety and practicalitiesStay well back from the water's edge.
  • Stay well back from the water's edge. The river runs fast and deep in places, the rocks are polished, and escape is difficult if you slip. Swimming here is dangerous.
  • Keep children and dogs close on the steps and near the drops. Dogs are generally welcome on a lead.
  • There are no toilets on site, so plan ahead before you set off.
  • Visit in dry daylight where you can. Low light makes the descent harder and the wet rock less forgiving.

The Welsh name Ffos Anoddun is popularly linked in local storytelling with Annwn, the Otherworld of Welsh mythology, which suits the enclosed, shadowy feel of the place. Treat this as folklore. The true origin of the name is disputed.
