Overview

About Swallow Falls (Rhaeadr Ewynnol)

Why stop

  • Powerful, photogenic cascades in a mossy wooded gorge

Heads up

  • Peak summer crowds and wet, uneven paths
Swallow Falls is the Afon Llugwy forcing its way through a narrow, wooded gorge. The water breaks into a long run of white cascades and fans across dark rock, which explains the Welsh name Rhaeadr Ewynnol, or “foaming waterfall.” Native woodland crowds the gorge, making the view feel much wilder than the A5 location suggests.

Plan your stop

Before you go

Best time to go

The falls are at their loudest after substantial rain, especially in spring or autumn. Those seasons also tend to give you more breathing room than the July and August rush. Drier weather reveals more of the individual rocks, while overcast light helps keep detail in the white water and deep woodland. Look above the gorge in summer for the swifts and swallows associated with the falls’ English name.

Getting there

The entrance is about two miles west of Betws-y-Coed on the A5, with parking near the site and regular S1 and T10 bus service. The managed viewpoint has a small admission charge. There are no toilets or other visitor facilities at the waterfall itself, so use the services in Betws-y-Coed or plan around the nearby hotel.

The attraction has welcomed visitors since 1913, but this is still a moving river rather than a manicured garden. Stay on the paths and viewing areas, take care around the gorge edge, and bring a waterproof layer if the forecast is damp.

The signed viewing area gives you the quick version: a short approach to platforms and steps beside the falls. For a more rewarding look, follow the north-bank route. It takes longer and you must walk back, but the angle is more dramatic and the path is usually less busy. Keep dogs on leads and wear shoes with real grip; wet rock, steps, spray, and uneven ground are part of the experience.
