Overview

About Tŷ Mawr Wybrnant

Why stop

  • Rare window into everyday Tudor-era Welsh life
  • Quiet valley walk adds depth beyond the house

Heads up

  • Farmhouse opening days are limited
  • Short route from the main car park is steep and uneven
Tŷ Mawr Wybrnant is a small, stone-built 16th-century farmhouse in the secluded Wybrnant valley. Its importance is cultural rather than grand: William Morgan was born here and later produced the 1588 translation of the Bible into Welsh, a landmark in the language's history. The restored rooms and Bible-related displays make this a strong stop for travellers who enjoy intimate history, not a quick viewpoint.

Best time to visit

The grounds and countryside walks are the dependable part of the visit throughout the year. The farmhouse and library open only on selected days, so check the current opening information before making a special drive; the toilets follow the farmhouse opening pattern. Spring through early autumn gives the best chance of a dry walk and clearer valley views. Wear shoes with good grip, allow more time than the short distance suggests, and bring water for the rural setting.

Access and facilities

Approach from the A5, turn towards Penmachno and follow the signs into the valley. The main car park is set back and uphill from the farmhouse. From there, use the short steep, uneven stone path or the longer route along the narrow road. Two accessible parking bays are available close to the house, but the approach and historic interiors still have limitations. Two unisex toilets meet accessible standards and are available when the farmhouse is open.

The house is modest and atmospheric, with rough stone walls, a slate roof, low rooms and a quiet upland setting. A small exhibition and library material help explain Morgan's work. The surrounding grounds and the Cwm Wybrnant circular walk are part of the appeal too, with river, farmland, ancient woodland and valley views rather than a long list of formal attractions. If you have time, the walk gives the house a much stronger sense of place than a quick stop alone.
