West Lake

Overview

West Lake is a broad, brackish lake set in one of North America’s largest, most pristine mangrove forests, about seven miles north of Flamingo along Main Park Road. It’s a classic quick stop: a short boardwalk to the water’s edge, a peaceful picnic area, and easy access to a mangrove paddle route.

Why go

If you want a low-effort, high-reward intro to mangroves, this is it. The 0.5‑mile round-trip boardwalk threads through red, black, and white mangroves plus buttonwood, with interpretive signs and big-water views at the end. Paddlers launch here for a serene route through connected lakes and channels.

What you’ll see

• Mangrove communities up close, transitioning as you near the coast.
• Wildlife typical of this habitat: wading birds, ospreys, and seasonal waterfowl. Reptiles—including American crocodiles and alligators—are possible sightings.
• Open-water lake scenes that can turn choppy on windy days.

Paddling

A designated canoe/kayak route starts at West Lake and continues roughly 7–8 miles toward Florida Bay through mangrove tunnels and lagoons. Small-motor limits apply here (around 5.5–6 hp max); most visitors paddle. Bring your own boat and safety gear—there are no rentals at the launch.

On-site amenities

You’ll find parking for cars and trailers, restrooms, a shaded picnic shelter with tables, and the boardwalk trailhead. There’s a boat/canoe/kayak launch and a small dock/pier. No food, store, or fuel—those services are down the road in Flamingo.

Tips for visiting

• Bring serious insect repellent—mosquitoes can be fierce in warm, wet months.
• The boardwalk is mostly unshaded; pack sun protection and water.
• Winds can rough up the lake—paddle early or pick calmer days.
• Recent storms have left some visible mangrove damage, but the boardwalk has been repaired and is open.

Best time to visit

Early morning or late afternoon delivers cooler temps, softer light for photos, and better wildlife activity. West Lake is typically less crowded than the park’s headline stops, so weekdays or weekends both work—just time it for the cooler ends of the day, especially outside winter.
