The boardwalk was rebuilt after hurricane damage and is open; you may still notice some storm‑scarred vegetation, but the forest feels very alive. Expect a calm, contemplative walk. Fair warning: parts of the mangrove swamp can carry a mildly sulfuric, salty smell—normal for this habitat.

It’s walkable year‑round. Winter (dry season, roughly November–April) brings cooler temps, fewer mosquitoes, and softer light—ideal for photos. Summer ups the humidity, insects, and chance of afternoon storms but thins the crowds; go early or late for shade and better wildlife activity. Morning and late afternoon offer the best photography at the lake overlook.

Logistics and tips

Trailhead parking, restrooms, benches, trash, and a picnic pavilion sit right off Main Park Road about 7 miles north of Flamingo. No bikes or pets on the boardwalk. Bring strong insect repellent (especially May–October), sun protection for the exposed lake end, and move quietly near the overlook to improve wildlife sightings. The adjacent launch makes it easy to pair this walk with a canoe/kayak paddle; note that small engines (6 hp or less) are permitted on West Lake itself.
