Snake Bight Trail

Snake Bight Trail is a flat 3.7-mile out-and-back from Main Park Road to a short boardwalk over a tidal creek at Florida Bay. Most of the walk is a straight path through shaded hardwood hammock, with coastal prairie near the end. The boardwalk and its birding are the payoff; if you want changing views all along the route, this one may feel repetitive. Allow about two hours, plus any time you spend watching the bay.

The trail starts at a roadside pull-off about four miles north of Flamingo Visitor Center. Follow Snake Bight south. At the Rowdy Bend junction, stay on Snake Bight for the boardwalk; Rowdy Bend and the road make a separate, much longer loop that is not included here.

Published one-way mileage varies from 1.6 to 1.8 miles. The mapped path to the boardwalk measures about 1.83 miles, so plan on 3.7 miles for the full return walk. The trail is flat but not wheelchair accessible, and pets are not allowed on trails or boardwalks.

The first part follows a broad, straight old road raised above borrow ditches. It narrows as it passes through tropical hardwood hammock, where mahogany and yellow nickerbean grow among dozens of tree species. Past the Rowdy Bend junction the canopy gives way to coastal prairie with buttonwoods and salt hay; the last stretch can feel soft underfoot as it approaches the bay.

The route ends at a short boardwalk and small viewing platform over Snake Bight, a shallow inlet of Florida Bay. Birding is often best near high tide. At low tide, mudflats and winding channels open up where shorebirds feed. From the platform, the creek and low mangroves give a better sense of the shallow inlet than trying to frame only the distant open bay; vegetation can partly screen the view.

The park says the trail is passable but leaves it unmaintained to protect the federally endangered Cape Sable thoroughwort. That means this is a rougher walk than the flat mileage suggests: growth can be tall, the Rowdy Bend junction is faint, and the marl near the end may be soft or muddy. Mosquitoes are a frequent complaint, though their intensity varies.
