Harris Saddle Shelter

Overview

Perched on the high, windswept Harris Saddle, this simple day-use shelter is the Routeburn Track’s weather refuge at the junction to the Conical Hill side track. It’s the place you duck into when the alpine wind is howling, grab a bite, and decide whether to push up Conical Hill for bigger views.

What makes it worth the stop

Expect sweeping vistas over Lake Harris and the surrounding rugged peaks when the weather cooperates. The saddle is the most exposed stretch between Routeburn Falls Hut and Lake Mackenzie, so having a roof and a toilet right here is a gift on foul days—and a perfect lunch spot on bluebird ones.

• Water: some reports note a rainwater tank tap; others report no water—don’t rely on it and treat any tank water if available.

Nearby highlight: Conical Hill

The spur to Conical Hill leaves right by the shelter. It’s a short, steep, sometimes hands-on climb that repays the effort with broader views across the Hollyford Valley and Darran Mountains. Many hikers leave their big packs at the shelter before the ascent.

Wildlife

You’re in kea country. These curious alpine parrots sometimes patrol the saddle—fun to watch, but keep your gear zipped and food stowed.

Getting here

The shelter sits between Routeburn Falls Hut and Lake Mackenzie on the Great Walk. Strong day hikers sometimes aim for the saddle as a big out-and-back from the Routeburn Shelter trailhead; otherwise, it’s a key waypoint on the standard multi-day traverse.

Best time to visit

• Season: Main use is October–April when the Routeburn is in season.
• Weather window: Clear, calm days deliver the views; clag and fronts can sock in Lake Harris fast.
• Timing: Reach the saddle late morning to early afternoon for warmer temps; start early if day-tripping from the Glenorchy side to give yourself turnaround margin.
