About Lake Mackenzie

Tucked into a steep, glacial basin on the Routeburn Track, Lake Mackenzie is the kind of Fiordland scene that stops you in your tracks—turquoise water, beech forest, and big, rugged peaks crowding the shoreline. It’s a classic overnight pause on one of New Zealand’s Great Walks and one of the most photogenic sub‑alpine lakes on the route.

Tips for visiting Lake Mackenzie

Book the hut or campsite early in Great Walk season—spaces go fast.
Off-season is quieter but bring a stove and expect reduced facilities.
After heavy rain, expect mud and possible flooding near the lake head.
Only accessible on foot via the Routeburn Track—plan trailhead logistics.
Detour to Split Rock just beyond the campsite for a quick side trip.

Great Walks season (Nov–Apr): the easiest logistics and full services, but expect crowds and booked-out bunks.
Shoulder/off-season: far quieter—sometimes blissfully so—with reduced facilities and more volatile weather.

Getting There & Facilities

You reach the lake on foot via the Routeburn Track (trailheads are The Divide and Routeburn Shelter). On the shore you’ll find Department of Conservation facilities: Lake Mackenzie Hut (50 bunks, basic kitchen setup without utensils, solar lighting, heating, and flushing toilets in season) and the adjacent campsite. In Great Walks season (Nov–Apr) there’s running water and a ranger presence; outside the season facilities are pared back (pit toilets, no gas, collect water from a tank) and you bring your own stove.
