Grave–Talbot Track

Grave–Talbot Track is a hard, remote out-and-back from the Gulliver River Bridge on SH94 into the Esperance River grasslands. The stored route follows the named Grave Talbot Route for about 3.6 km one way, then returns along the same corridor for roughly 7.2 km (4.5 miles) total. It is a rough Fiordland outing rather than the full Grave–Talbot Pass crossing.

Expect a narrow, rough and lightly marked route with river travel, steep ground and demanding route-finding. Fiordland weather changes quickly, and wet rock, high water and poor visibility can make the outing substantially harder. The continuation beyond the grasslands toward Grave–Talbot Pass is a serious alpine route and is not part of this stored day-walk line.

Start at the Gulliver River Bridge on Milford Sound Highway (SH94), not at The Chasm car park. There is no verified formal car park for this route in the available access evidence, so use only a safe, legal pull-off without blocking the bridge or highway. Carry navigation equipment, allow extra time for conditions, and turn around if river levels or weather are unsuitable.

The route follows the historic Grave–Talbot approach through dense Fiordland forest and river valleys toward open Esperance grasslands, with increasingly dramatic Darran Mountain views. The route honours the historic crossing associated with William Grave and Arthur Talbot, but this visitor experience ends well before the pass.
