This is the easiest way to get that classic Milford Track feel without committing to the full multi‑day tramp. A water taxi drops you at Sandfly Point, then it’s a mellow rainforest walk to a photogenic swing bridge facing Giant Gate Falls—a Fiordland crowd‑pleaser.
Plan on about 6.8 miles/11 km total, out‑and‑back from Sandfly Point, with roughly 50 m/164 ft of gentle elevation gain. The track is well‑maintained gravel and mostly flat, but Fiordland rain can leave sections wet or muddy. You’ll turn around at the swing bridge opposite the waterfall and return the same way.
Giant Gate Falls thunders into a deep pool framed by mossy beech forest and ferns. The swing bridge gives the best angle for photos and a lingering lunch break. Keep an eye out for New Zealand fantails, South Island robins, and tui flitting through the understory. The wider valley is classic glacial country—steep sides and lush, ever‑damp green.
Bring a proper rain jacket and insect repellent—both will likely see action. Sturdy shoes are best even though the tread is easy. The swing bridge area has space to sit for a snack; give yourself time to enjoy the falls.
Late October through April aligns with the main Milford Track season and the most reliable access. Waterfalls are most dramatic after rain. Go early for softer light and fewer people; afternoons can be busier and you’ll be timing your return with the taxi schedule.
Park at the end of Freshwater Basin Road in Deepwater Basin (by the wharf/marina), then take the water taxi to Sandfly Point.
Heavy rain is common—expect wet, slippery sections. Book the water taxi and know the last pickup time; short waits are common. Sandflies are persistent—use repellent.
